The CPC formula

CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks

Example: You spend $500 and get 1,800 clicks: $500 ÷ 1,800 = $0.28 per click. At the same CPC, 5,000 clicks would cost about $1,390.

What is CPC?

CPC is the average price of one click on your ad. On search ads you usually bid per click, so CPC is close to what you set; on social ads you often pay per impression, and CPC is the result of your CPM and how many people click.

Use it to see how much traffic your budget buys and to compare keywords, audiences and ads. Whether a CPC is good depends on what the click is worth to you, which is what CPA and conversion rate show.

What is a good CPC?

It depends on the channel, the campaign objective and what you sell, so compare against your own history first. For scale, these are the typical figures from the largest recent studies of ad accounts and shops.

How to lower your CPC

  • Improve the click-through rate. More clicks from the same impressions lower the cost of each one.
  • Make the ad and the landing page match the search or audience. On Google Ads, better relevance raises Quality Score and can lower what you pay.
  • Drop or bid down keywords, audiences and placements that get clicks but no sales.
  • Try long-tail keywords, which usually cost less per click than broad ones.

What CPC doesn't tell you

  • CPC counts clicks, not customers. A cheap click that never converts costs more than an expensive one that does.
  • Platforms count clicks differently: some include every click on the ad, others only link clicks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate CPC?

Divide ad spend by the number of clicks. $500 for 1,800 clicks is $500 ÷ 1,800 = $0.28 per click.

How do you calculate CPC from CPM and CTR?

CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10), with CTR in percent. A $6 CPM with a 1.5% CTR gives $6 ÷ 15 = $0.40 per click.

How many clicks will my budget buy?

Divide the budget by your CPC. $1,000 at a $0.50 CPC buys about 2,000 clicks.

Is a lower CPC always better?

No. What matters is the cost of a customer. Check the conversion rate and CPA of the clicks before cutting the ones that cost more.
